"Is this him, Boss?" A strange male voice asked from the darkness behind him.

Ringing filled his ears, and the taste of blood filled his mouth. Searching with the tip of his tongue, he was sure at least one tooth was loose, but luckily they were all still there. Mom always said he had a strong jaw.

"Does he look like the man you've heard stories about?" Another male voice spoke, this time from in front.

Merchant kept his eyes closed and controlled his breathing. The longer he let them believe he was still out, the better chance he had to figure out where he was and what they wanted. Plus, maybe the ringing and pain splitting down the back of his head would lessen.

"I'm tired of waiting. Wake his ass up." The second voice commanded as Merchant felt someone grab the back of his head.

Cold water splashed onto his face, the light in the room burned into his eyes as he coughed out the water from his lungs.

"Glad to see you back in the world of the living."

Merchant eyed the man as he seated himself comfortably on top of a polished wooden desk. The man dressed as ornately as he could. Bright red silk pants and shirt, six gold necklaces around his neck, and more rings than could be counted lined his fingers. Only the tattoo on his neck stuck out to Merchant. Yellow and slanted, a pair of eyes adorned each side of his throat. Snake eyes.

"You can still speak, can't you? My man here didn't knock out all your teeth, I know, I had him check." Snake Eyes chuckled as he leaned backward.

Reaching back onto his desk, the man pulled out a rolled cigarette and lit it. The sweet smell that filled every room of the building quickly spread from the small flame. Merchant didn't respond. Silence always killed men like him.

"Gonna be the tough guy, are we?" Snake Eyes nodded to his assistant.

Pain and air rushed out of Merchant's lungs as the man behind him stepped up and slammed his meaty fist into his stomach. Air struggled to find its way in as his abdomen cramped with coughing.

"Did that straighten anything up?

The man lounged back as he took another drag on his cigarette. Merchant, his breath returned, spit a wad of blood down on the floor, the pain continuing to grow behind his head.

"Fuck, you are a stubborn bastard aren't you? Well, let me tell you what I've heard." Snake eyes stood and towered over Merchant. "I've got this tiny little rumor going around my town that there is this man, what do they call him, Hank?"

"The Black Devil."

"Ah, yes, the Black Devil. They say he's making his way west on old Interstate 80. Every city he stops at, people start dying. They say if you have the money, or the ‘soul' to sell. Anyone you want to die will be dead before he leaves. Now, here you are. Black man, traveling west on Interstate 80, and
